I know this question has been asked many times but nothing was really able to help me...

I have a 65" Toshiba dlp tv, a Samsung HT-X40 dvd/home theater system, a ps3 and a HDTV digital cable box. The tv has 3 hdmi inputs and i use the ps3, the dvd/home theater system and the cable box for all three hdmi inputs into the tv. When i watch dvds the surround sound of course works just like its supposed to. However i do not know how to hook up the cable box and ps3 so the surround sound will work with them without suffering video quality by using the imputs in the receiver.

I know alot about electronics but home theater is just not my best area so any help/advice would be awesome!

  1. Is Samsung HT-X40 a DVD with amp build - in ? If it is correct you can't get surround sound from cable box and PS3 because it doesn't have any optical or coaxial audio cable inputs. You need a seperate receiver to get surrond sound.

  2. if you are plugging in your hdmi connections directly to the tv then i would run a optical cable out of your tv to the optical in on your system if i has one then all you have to do is switch inputs on the tv and it will pass the digital source to your receiver. Make sure you have dolby digital turned on in your ps3 and the cable box and you should have no problems.
