  1. The three leading causes of death for 15- to 24-year-olds are automobile crashes, homicides and suicides  -- alcohol is a leading factor in all three.

Alcohol use among adolescents has also been associated with considering, planning, attempting, and completing suicide.

Dependence on alcohol and other drugs is also associated with several psychiatric problems,  such as:

      depression

      anxiety

      oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)

      antisocial personality disorder

    Decreased interest in school/failing grades.

Lack of interest in family and friends.

  2. Statistically there are many, realistically there is several no one wants to look at.

The main problem with alcohol is that because the law forbids it use, responsible, or otherwise for those under the age of 21, we have effectively created clandestine use of alcohol behind adults backs, (parents) who if they had been allowed to teach responsible use, along with social responsibilities that come along with the use of alcohol; like not driving, excessive use, drunken ship, or college parties, this issue would not be such a problem.

Yes there will always be people who will have problems with alcohol, minors, or those of legal drinking age.

We can prevent much by teaching the responsible use of alcohol instead of forcing young people to go underground.

We have to accept that we cannot legislate "choice".

Agreed, parents have to teach young people respect for authority, and the law, however some laws create more problems than they prevent.

Just as a thought at age 18, or 21 young adults magically gain the knowledge, and become responsible simply because they turn this age? but one minute before midnight lets say, age 17 at 11.59PM they are still unable to make these decisions, but at 12.01 AM they are??

They can join the military at age 17, are given the training, and responsibilities many adults would shy away from, die for their country, but we tell them they are not capable to make the decision to have a beer, or not!!??

Teaching young people responsibility, and proper use needs to start much younger, and continue past the "coming of age", only then will we see attitudes, and social change that brings about better out comes, and decision making that could last a life time.
