Hi

I would like to home educate my daughter who is 4 yrs old and has Aspergers syndrome. This is not a decision we have took lightly but feel after a yr at Nursery this is best for her.

Does anyone know any sites or resources useful to me? I am in Essex in the U.K so any support groups etc would be great too.

Any tips or pratrical info would help. I want to do the best for my little one but find all the info out there daunting!

Thank you in advance for any help.

  1. Definatly. Look up Education Otherwise on the Internet. There is a joining fee, but they are absolutly helpful in home education. Not only will you get the right information, you will also receive a booklet with all the other members, where they are in the counrty and internationally, as well as groups, activities and a pen pal system for the children to keep in social contact with other home schooled children.

  2. Home education can be very daunting, but it's all about organization. One of the key things you're going to have to take into account is that (if you're personally instructing your child) you're going to need to create a set routine (with a little room for error, or sick days, or whatever). You don't necessarily have to stick with the routine all the time, but it helps because it establishes an order to which a normal school day would go.

If you're personally teaching your child, you should also be very familiar with the material, especially because at such a young age, she'll have a lot of questions that you'll have to answer. This can be pretty tough, so if there is a subject you don't know very well, it could be a good idea to hire a tutor, unless you're studious enough to learn the subject yourself.

I've also included some resources for home education, these have helpful information as to where you should begin, and also a few helpful links.

    Good luck!

  3. there are a lot of internet sites that you can go on to download work. Get in touch with Education Welfare at your local council and explain that you are going to teach your child at home they will send out a form for you to fill in also write to your daughters school telling them you are withdrawing her from the register.I have just started teaching my 12 year old at home so good luck and please feelfree to keep in touch

  4. I can see why you find it daunting - I applaud you for making this decision after some thought. I would suggest you use the Dfes curriculum information as the first port of call. This will hep you get a grasp of the national curriculum requirements - then you can adapt it to your daughters needs. As with any child, aspergers or not, it is a process of trial and error - seeing what she responds best to.

There are some brilliant books out there on aspergers and learning styles - I will look into it for you for the age group of your daughter (I teach secondary you see).

I really admire your decision to take on this job - it will be hard but very rewarding! I have a yahoo group called stressedteachers that you are welcome to join and ask others for ideas/support and chat! Let me know if you would like me to look into it further for you. My email - niki5773@yahoo.co.uk.  I send my best wishes x

  5. look for a group like hslda first. I know here at least we use it as a launching pad. They have all the home school laws for America and some for other countries www.hslda.org. If you can't find any thing there that can help you may be they can point you in the right direction for help! Good Luck!

  6. Start by checking out the Education Otherwise website: https://www.education-otherwise.org.uk They are the umbrella group for home schooling in the UK

  7. If you have any Christian book stores, start there! They usually carry everything you may need including computer software that will help teach, grade and keep records! Then you can use your search engine, type in math or reading or phonics then see all the info you'll need.
