Homeless??

Question

When you apply for homeless do they give you hotel vouchers and help you find a place??Or do you have to stay in a shelter??I know a few people who received vouchers...

You take your chances. Sometimes you are lucky, other times not.

A good friend of mine, a retired and disabled man who lived in a room in an old house, called me up one night. The house had caught fire and everyone had to get out in a hurry.  He was standing on a street corner in the rain in his socks because he didn't have his shoes on when the fire started and didn't have time to put them on!  He asked if I'd come to pick him up.

He had a few hundred in the bank but most of what he owned was lost in the fire!  We let him stay with us a few days.  I took him to the social services office.  All they could do for him was to give him a voucher worth $20 at a grocery store.  The grocery chain had provided these vouchers for just such emergencies.  But there were no housing vouchers.

I'm guessing that hotel/motels provide a few vouchers now and then as charity or a tax writeoff, and when they're gone they're gone.
