Question:

Homemade Boom Mic Camcorder Idea?

Hi!

I'm preparing to work on a new video project for a kids ministry at my chuch and I am fairly new to filming. I have done a video which you can check out:

http://www.godtube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=0223c6ef38f2dd996aa2

(The website lowered the quality though)

But in that video I was able to get by without using the internal mic on my video camera

This time I need to use a microphone when I record and I know that audio is %60 of a any video production, or so I've heard.

Here's my idea for a boom mic and I want to know if you think it is feasible, or practical

I will buy an omnidirectional dynamic microphone ($25) and construct the boom myself for under ($10) and make a homemade windshield to put on the mic, like the one on this website:

What do you think? I'm on a low budget, so please don't throw in anything super expensive (under $85)

What I want to know most is if the omnidirectional mic will b okay Thanks

  1. A $25 microphone will very likely sound like a $25 microphone. That would be the one thing you may want to consider - up your budget to the $80-100 range for a microphone and you've got a great idea.

  2. The system looks great and I've seen those home-made Zeppelin wind-shields in action many times and they got great results if well made. A boom is a boom and basically any stick that you're comfortable holding for the duration will do. Even the lightest stick gets heavy unless you support it somehow.

The one thing you shouldn't skimp on is the mic though. I would go for a shotgun for this type of work though myself. I've heard good results from cheap battery powered shotgun microphones in the past so it is feasible. Hopefully you'll make some money from this to buy a decent mic. If you do, go for Sennheiser, Audio-Technica or even Rode.

    Best of luck.

PS, this type of ultra cheapie mic.. I'm told... does produce reasonable results for the price.
