Question:

Homemade "green" cleaning products?

I have asthma and have found that when I use chemicals like bleach or ammonia to clean my house, my asthma acts up. I have tried making cleaners out of vinegar and castille soap and have found that castille soap really doesn't get the the tougher jobs done, and I absolutely hate the smell of vinegar. Is there anything else that I could make, or buy that works well.

  1. yes, yes yes! I'm so happy you asked!

I found all of my cleaning recipes on care2.com.  I have asthma too.

I gave you the link, but it's under Healthy Home and Non-Toxic Cleaning.  Just use the search box to type in "windows" or "floors" or whatever you're seeking.  It's a great site!

Also, I own this book (2nd link) from Seventh Generation called The Green Guide, and made a lot o great cleaning recipes from it too.  Try and see if you could buy it or take it out from your library.

For my good friend's wedding I made her a beautiful book of all natural cleaning solutions, recipe style, from these sources.  She loved it and now has a non-toxic home to raise her baby in.

Also you can spend a lot more and go to Whole Foods/a natural store and buy scent free all natural products.

    Many good wishes :)

  2. Lemon

    Orange

    baking soda

    peppermint oil

    Cinnamon

    on and on

Remember the fruits which have natural acids. Though keep in mind these natural acids will eat away at caulking, morter (sp) this type of man made materials.

Have you removed all the carpet and padding in your home? This is the most dirtiest thing in our homes. Want proof?

Lift up a piece of carpet and look underneath, do not be surprised if you start sneezing or feeling sick if you have allergies.  Clean the carpet all you want it will never get a hundred percent clean.

    Hope this helps!

  5. Well Clorox just introduced a line of "green" products but they smell just as bad. I think they just pretend they're "green" to keep activists happy.

  6. Vinager works good on carpets, counters and tables...and the smell goes away after a day or two

  7. I'm glad that more people are getting aware of this! All this increase in diseases and chronic conidtions like Alzheimers and Asthma and Adhd etc etc. are directly connected to all the chemicals around us and the lack of exercise and chemicals in our food.

    TRUTH!

  8. I have been using Seventh Generation products for a long time and find they work really well, smell nice and don't seem to cause any negative side effects.  There are many other products out there, but SG seems to be really conscious about how they formulate their products. Hope this helps!
