Question:

Homemade recipies for a shiny coat

So I'm finally getting my horse out here to Utah after a couple months of being at school. I'm so excited and can't wait to see him again and get him all cleaned up. Unfortunately he is an extremely hard keeper and I know that after his long x-country trip he's going to be thin and probably have a pretty dull coat. Is there any kind of spray that I could MAKE that could give his coat an extra shine until I can get his weight back up? I will be starting him slowly on rice bran and alfalfa but I don't want him to be all grungy looking for the time being.

So does anyone know of a coat spray I could make? I'm not interested in show sheen or anything expensive like that or any feeding suggestions. I know how to make his coat shiny through his feed, I just want something for him in the mean time. Thanks.

  1. Well I dont know what you can make yourself but theres loads of stuff to buy, just go on ebay and search, ebays the answet to your question, mabie theres a book to giev you loads of info in making your own stuff to buy =]

  2. I feed my horses a 1/2 cup of freshly ground flax seed every day. It makes their coats shine and their manes and tails grow thick and long. I wouldn't be without it! You will notice a difference in just a few days.

  3. go to the pet store

  4. i just bought this stuff for 10 dollars. so i thought that was a pretty good price.

im going to see if it works well either today or tommorrow.

    its called Vetrolin Body Wash.

  5. you carnt beat a good bath! if hes a darker colour then bath a few days before to give the natural oils in the coat time to reproduce itself again!cause from my experiance when i bath my black mare she has quite a dull coat at first then after a few days it shines up again!also try using human condioner when you bath him, try something like sunsilk the ones especially for blondes cause if you look at it carefully you'll see bits of glitter so that'l really make there coat shine! But if im going to a show and i had a dark colour horse id bath them about 5days before using condioner then spend as long as possible every day till the show grooming them good, hard elbow grease is the cheapest thing to do!and if i was taking a very light coloured horse to a show then id bath them either on the day if possible or the day before then spot wash them if theres any stains.I had a quick look on the web for any tips but there wasnt really anything on there, something else you could use for manes and tails is either baby oil or ordinary cooking oil as long as its not really hot!and dont use it till the very last minuate!Pulling the mane and tail and trimming the feathers, tail, bridlepatch, whiskers, beard, ears, the hair that grows down around the tops of the hoofs all things like that really if done neatly can really make a difference to a horse thats abit run down.if hes hard to keep clean then if poss stable him to keep him cleaner use a tail bandage etc. then if theres any mucky bits use a soapy, wet sponge to get rid of it and wash his legs again like i said you dont want to give him a full bath cause he'll lose his shine for 5 days or so!goodluck i hope ive been a little help and not just told you what u already know!

  6. A super shine comes from a healthy horse; from the inside out.  A spray only covers the deficits that your horse may have.  He may need worming, have his teeth floated, a really good general supplement and a GREAT coat supplement such as Omegas from United Vet Equine.  There's no substitue for a great hair coat that has been achieved from the inside out.

A bath will just begin the process to get this horse back on track.  Horses that are on a great hair coat supplement produce a little additional oil on their skin which makes all the difference in shine....you'll see that oil when you rinse them off as the water from the hose appears to bead up on their skin.   You'll know you're on the right track.

Edit:  There aren't any "shortcuts" to health or a "shiney" coat...if he's unhealthy, it shows.  "Shine" won't cover it up.  Just my two cents....been there and done it.

A poor hair coat is a reliable indicator of an unhealthy horse.  Also poor hoof quality.  "Looking beyond the shine".........

    Informative info.

  7. You could buy some Absorbine Showshine....it works awesome...however for an at home remedy I use a little baby oil on a soft cloth....only use a wee little bit tho...or he will get oily! Also use conditioner in his mane, tail & his body (where the saddle doesnt go!) and use a rubber curry to get the gunge out of his skin while when you are washing him.

    Hope it helped!
