Question:

Homemade spaghetti sauce separated, why?

I just made some spaghetti sauce and canned it but after processing the jars I took them out and the sauce had separated. It was a bit watery when I made it and now the liquid has separated from the bigger chunks of tomato. Did I do something wrong? Is there anyway I can salvage the sauce? TIA

  1. This is what happens when you store it in the fridge. Did you put the jars in the refrigerator? It is fine and is still edible, it will thicken up once you start to cook with it.

  2. This is normal. When you can things with lots of liquid, the liquid will rise to the top as the heavier solids settle to the bottom. Just shake it up or stir it once you put it in the saucepan. It will be fine.
