at what age can you move to a different house in the uk?

  1. You can get married at 16 in Scotland without your parent's consent.  As far as I'm aware that's also the earliest you can set up home on your own.


  2. In England -

    If you're entering into a legally binding contract, you must be a minimum of 18 years old. This is because you cannot enter into such an agreement if you're still legally a minor. I would assume you can get parental consent, but this might mean your parents have to pay the rent/mortgage, even if the money really comes from you.

    If it's a private tenancy, you can be under 18, but it might not be strictly legal. I lived with my partner when I was 17, but he was 21, so he was legally an adult. We never signed anything though, and he never declared the money he received from us, so it wasn't exactly legal. I don't know what the situation would be if you're both under 18.
