Homeowners insurance to fix foundation?

My mom has homeowners insurance on her house. is there any way she can get the foundation repaired through her homeowners insurance? please any advice at all would be great.

  1. If it is crumbling (like over time) or shifted, the answer is NO. Insurance is for sudden and accidental damage, not something that has happened over a long period of time (thus preventable).


  2. I think it will depend on how the damage to her foundation occurred.  Usually Homeowner's Insurance protects you from problems with other people, etc.

  3. its very doubtful since most foundation problems are from earth shift and thats excluded on home policies.  if its from another problem, she can call her agent and see if he/she thinks it would be covered and worth filing a claim.

  5. I've never seen a homeowners policy that covers the foundation.  I'm not saying it's not out there, but I doubt it.

    It's also going to depend on WHY the foundation needs to be fixed.  Was it a fire?  Maybe covered.  Did it settle due to age?  Absolutely not covered - this is normal, not an "accident".  Water damage seeping through the foundation is ALSO not covered.

    Likely she's on her own for this.
