  1. Most policies offer coverage of your personal belongings between 50 and 70 percent of the amount you have on your home. You should conduct a home inventory before you purchase insurance, so that you can determine what amount is needed. Most policies cover your possessions anywhere in the world.

  2. Doesn't your homeowners policy already provide coverage for contents? It is a percentage of the face value of your coverage. If you desire to include furniture as a special item you pay an additional premium for the coverage. I can see it applied for an expensive mink coat, but not furniture. Better look at your policy carefully so that you understand what you have protected.

  3. your insurance will already have a set amt to pay you for all your household goods...the only things you should add to a policy are things that are valuable. (jewelery, cameras, electronics,  paintings, etc...) your furniture may be valuable to you, but for insurance it's not.

  4. If you have homeowners, likely you don't NEED to add the new furniture.  You already have 'contents' coverage built in.

    Talk to your agent.

  5. In addition to what Chrys said you may want to keep the receipts and take pictures of your furniture and other household goods just to establish a record in case you need to file a claim.  Had a family loose their house and everything in it a few years ago and they had to declare everything lost right down to the last pair of socks to get it covered.  It took them a week just to fill out all the paperwork.
