Homer Bailey shines as Cincinnati Reds overwhelm Houston Astros 7-3 – MLB Update
Homer Bailey pitched seven scoreless innings to give a 7-3 victory to Cincinnati Reds against Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park, Houston on Tuesday, May 10.
Bailey demonstrated his efficacy as a pitcher in admirable form. "I've got all my family and friends waiting for me and to be able to pitch in front of them at this stadium is beyond me," he said of the 40 friends and family who came to the park on Tuesday
night. "I've missed it every single time before."
Tuesday’s game began with Reds making an aggressive move against the Astros. Brett Myers received heavy strikes in the very first inning. Joey Votto doubled to deep right to score the first run for Cincinnati followed by Brandon Phillips’ single. Jay Bruce
scored a two-run homer to take the lead to 4-0. Bailey then did his job of containing the Astros’ hitters.
He pitched scoreless innings while the Reds’ hitters went on a running rampage. Votto scored a two-run homer in the second inning to pile up the lead to 6-0, virtually putting an end to Houston’s hope of winning the game. It was Myers who gave up six runs
in two innings.
Bailey’s rival, Myers of Houston was hardly pleased with his performance. "I felt that I was throwing too many breaking pitches," Myers said. "I was pitching all those guys like they were Babe Ruth or something like that the first two innings, instead of
trusting my stuff and going right after them."
Homer continued his march with renewed zeal. The outstanding feat that the Reds’ offence put on display strengthened Bailey’s confidence and allowed him to pitch with more force.
Ryan Hanigan scored the seventh run for the Reds in the seventh inning off of Sergio Escalona’s fastball. Bailey, in the intervening period, pitched his seventh inning, keeping all of them scoreless.
When Aroldis Chapman came to replace Bailey, Angel Sanchez scored the first run for the Astros. Followed by Hunter Pence, who earned a two-run homer for Houston to bring the lead down to 7-3 for the Reds.
Nick Masset was relentless, as he only gave up one hit in the ninth inning, disallowing the Astros to make any late come-back. Masset’s ability to contain the Astros hitters in the ninth inning sealed the 7-3 victory for the Reds.
