Homer Bailey‘s economical pitching helps Cincinnati Reds beat Houston Astros 10-4 – MLB Update
Cincinnati Reds’ starter Homer Bailey did a great job with the ball as he pitched six solid innings and had seven strike-outs in the Reds’ 10-4 victory against the Houston Astros at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati on May 5.
It was considered as the first back-to-back win for the Reds for quite a long span. After this convincing win, Baker said, “It's nice to be able to have them back. The next step is to have them back and comfortable. With the injuries and their layoff, who
knows? They should be strong in September. It could work out great for us."
Bailey permitted a single run on four hits including one earned run and one walk. He made his come-back from the disabled list on last Thursday. During the spring training season, Bailey suffered a shoulder injury and stopped his pitching work. The Reds’
Manager Dusty Baker was pleased from Bailey’s show right through the game. Baker said, “That was a great performance for his first time out. He was outstanding right from the start, very sharp.”
The first inning passed without any score for both sides. The Reds marked the scorecard 1-0 in the second inning when Chris Heisey made a walk and posted a run on the shot of Edgar Renteria. Both teams again remained scoreless in the third inning. Joey Votto
singled in the fourth inning on a contribution with Ryan Hanigan, who went 3-for-4 and extended the Red’s lead 3-0.
The Astros went without a score up to the fifth inning. The Reds added another run in their lead and moved to 4-0 in the fifth inning when Paul Janish singled towards centre-field. The Astros scored their first run in the sixth inning to reduce the lead
by a two-out RBI of Jason Bourgeois. The Reds pushed their lead to 6-1 at the end of the sixth inning when Fred Lewis hit his first homer of the season.
The Reds’ reliever Aroldis Chapman gave a walk on loaded bases and permitted a two-run single to Hunter Pence in the seventh inning. With that three run contribution, the Astros cut-off their deficit to 6-4. The Reds outclassed their rivals in the eighth
inning when they posted four runs on the scoreboard. Jay Bruce hit a solo homer and made three runs on four hits to end the inning and took the Reds’ lead 10-4.
The Astros’ starter Brett Myers was too expensive as he allowed six runs on nine hits with just four strike-outs in five inning pitches.
The Reds had a bad time in the start of the current season as they played the previous matches without Johnny Cueto and Bailey, who missed the last games due to a shoulder injury. The Reds’ club will rally again when Cueto recovered himself from the disabled
list.
