Homers from Alex Rodriguez help New York Yankees get past Tampa Bay Rays 6-2: MLB Update
New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez broke out with the bat in the Club’s 6-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays, at the Tropicana Field, Florida, on Tuesday, May 17, to tie the series two all.
Alex launched a devastating 438-feet long one-run homer off Rays’ starter, James Shields, in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1. After two scoreless innings, Rodriguez hammered another one-run homer, this time 425-feet long in the top of
the sixth innings, to earn the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
It was a much needed win for the Yankees and their manager, Joe Girardi's statement echoed that notion. He said while speaking to reporters,  "We needed a win. It is a big win for us. I don't want to say must-win, but as close as you can get to a must-win
in the month of May."
Meanwhile, happy to have contributed with the bat, Alex Rodriguez said, "They felt great. It felt good off the bat. One was a changeup and then one was a fastball."
Chris Dickerson and Derek Jeter fully backed up Rodriguez, as both players scored an RBI single each to elevate the lead to 4-1 in the top of the seventh inning. Derek Jeter added another RBI single right after Brett Gardner earned his first run of the game
to take his club to a 6-1 lead.
Spectators hissed when Posada, who has some tussle with the manager after refusing to play in the ninth position, came for his first at-bat in the second inning, in which he grounded out. However, when he drove in a single in the fifth, the Yankees fans
appreciated him with a huge cheer.
"It feels good to be back in the line-up and be able to contribute," Posada said. "To be able to be a big part of a big win. It is great to be able put everything away, behind you, go out there, and play ball. It's one of those things that you're happy to
be back in the line-up and it was a good feeling."
While the batters were in full swing, the Yankees starter Ivan Nova tossed five strong innings to secure his fourth win of the season. Nova gave just one run on four hits including a homer, allowed two walks and made four strikes in his seventh start of
the season. Nova now has a 4-3 record with a 4.33 ERA.
Relievers David Robertson, Joba Chamberlain, and closer Mariano Rivera tossed scoreless innings to cement the Yankees 21st victory this season. Out of all relievers, Amaury Sanit gave away one run in his less than an inning spell.
Rays’ starter, James Shields yielded four runs on eight hits, walked one and made nine strikeouts, but failed to save his team from a second loss in sixth start of the season. Reliever, Cesar Ramos tossed an impressive scoreless one-hit inning before closer
Brandon Gomes gave two RBI singles on three hits in the last inning.
