Question:

Homeschool Help, please!?

Alright, I might as well get down to the nitty gritty before going into depth over my situation. I'm fifteen, suppose to be going into the tenth grade, live in Missouri and am broke.

Okay, the story: Because of some issues at school my family sat down and decided maybe homeschooling would be better for me; I was bored at school anyways. But we didn't really think it through and so far I haven't been able to find a good curriculum, an affordable online school or dream up my own. So instead of getting ahead I'm actually about half a semester behind; it doesn't really worry me that I'm behind at the moment but more that I'll be even more behind if I can't find someplace to give me some guidelines to follow. Please don't take that as 'I want somebody to baby me and tell me what do' it's just, I'm new to this and really, really lost on how to go about it; I'd like some sort of example for a year or so before branching off on my own. A good curriculum sight, preferably in-depth and at a cheap price or some free online school that I haven't found would be amazing. K12 isn't in my area and neither is connections, unfortunately. Please, please, if you have any suggestions at all post them up. I'm open to anything at this point.

  1. The American school is good.  You can advance at your own pace. They will give you credit for school attended and will take payment plans.

Here is a address for you to contact them to get further information.

AMerican School, 2200 EAST 170th st., Lansing Ill 60438

    Phone number is (708) 418 2800

We have found this to be a good school that keeps our records for us so they are available from a third party when my daughter goes on to college.

  2. Where exactly do you live? There are a bunch of good homeschool groups out there, so look around and research to find one.

  3. There are several options in MO but you can always use an affordable online charter like Progress Academy or CLASS

    Missouri Virtual School

    St. Louis Virtual School

    Missouri Connections Academy

  4. Don't think in terms of "behind". If you're not following the school curriculum, there is no behind or ahead or anything like that; you're on  different path.

I can offer you some guidelines from online, just keep in mind they won't match up with public school, aren't intended to, so they may or may not meet your long-term goals, although they may satisfy your short-term ones.

Another site to check, although they don't seem to be accepting enrollment at the moment, is http://www.k-12freehomeschool.org/

I'd highly recommend seeing if your library has The Teenage Liberation Handbook to really help you get some ideas of how to branch off on your own once you're ready.

  5. ok...here's what I would do.

    option 1-

Go to the junior college. Take the placement tests and start taking community college courses.

option 2- Put together your own classes. MIT has opencourseware-free online courses. Use a book called The Write to Write for your writing curriculum-available at the library. Aleks math for math. Use the one month free trial and only do math for that one month. http://www.aleks.com/webform/homeschool_... Get a whole year of math done in one month so it will be free. It would be difficult but doable. Study history using the Kingfisher Enclyclopedia-do outlines of each page and short reports. Cover the sections based on what period in history you need to study. Buy an older copy of this online or borrow from the library. more later ...

  6. Hey =] I am 15 years old and studying at home as well.

Ask your school district if they offer a program called, "Independent Study" its free, great teachers, at home, only difference between home-school and independent is basically that YOU are working with teachers, not PARENTS! You will be assigned homework each week, you can go as fast or as slow as you like (within reason, of course), you can take classes at a local community college for triple credits, and they chart your progress. Don't stress. There are other options out there. I am ahead because of Independent Study I am 15 and in 11th grade =] If you need help just email me. Good luck.

  7. Why not take a CAT test, and see where you are?  They are inexpensive, 25.00, and you will see if you are really behind.  You may find you know more than you think you do!  (Do a search on Seton and CAT, and it'll come up).

Be sure to keep up with Math.

You can buy homeschooling books very inexpensively, if you buy used.

Your best bet, like the other person said, is to get into Jr. College.
