Question:

Homeschool in MO?

I live in OK but will be moving to MO in a few days. I have withdrawn my son from school here but when I get to Mo I want to home school him. Should I give a letter of intent to homeschool in OK or MO or neither one? Thanks for any help!

  1. In MO. you do not even need to notify the school district that you will be homeschooling. You will be required to keep records of all subjects and to keep a log of time spent. In MO.homeschooled students must be "schooled" for 1000 hours    a year. 600 hours in the five required subjects. Of these 600 hours 400 must be in the "regular homeschool location".

To answer your question. I personally would not give either state notice as neither one requires it.

I strongly advise you to join Home School Legal Defense Association. It is about $115 a year, but so worth it as they will defend you if the legality of your homeschool ever comes into question. Once you are a member you will also have access to their legal forms. Right now you can go to their website www.hslda.org and read the homeschool laws for the state of Missouri.

  2. You need to give the school something in writing that says that you have withdrawn your son to homeschool, just so that truancy officers don't end up on your doorstep; many OK cities are cracking down on that.

However, you're not required to give any certain form to OK or MO (unless you're pulling him from school, just for the truancy thing), you just go for it.  Keep your records and make sure that you're following state guidelines, but other than that, neither one requires notice or keeps track.

Here is a site that will tell you the regs for homeschooling in MO: http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp?St...

You don't have to turn in records or eval's, or anything like that; you have to have the records in case anyone comes looking for them.  (The records will also really help you in formulating transcripts.)

    Hope that helps!

  3. You need to wd him from the school in OK and let the school district in MO know you will be homeschooling unless you enroll him in a public online charter
