I moved to this new town to start things over, have a 6 year old at home I homeschool and now have to register her with the state because of regulations. How can I test her to make sure she is up to date with knowledge. never had to do this before. there are no support groups here anywhere. Maybe I need to move back?

  1. i really don`t know

  2. This is the time of year when a lot of HS groups/associations do group testing.  I would hook up soon with your local one (need to anyway, IMO) to see if someone is offering one.

You can use the BJU Press Testing Services for the ITBS ("Iowa"-for all states, though) if you have a bachelor's degree.  You can use their Stanford *if* you have a teacher's certification.

    Many people use Seton also.

However, if your state requires testing, make sure you know *which* tests thay allow.

If you just moved there, I highly doubt you have to test right away, or even this year.  I'm sure there's a "lag" period.  Even when we moved to a new state, my public school child didn't have to go for 28 days, especially since she had an IEP.

Did you check Yahoo Groups for a support group?  Search for your state, then your region, then your city.

  3. I'm confused. When you moved to a new town, did you change states? Which state are you now in? That would help us know what you are dealing with exactly. There will be a state-based support group that you can join and have at least online contact with--they will be able to tell you more about how to meet the requirements. As for "up to date with knowledge", is that what you need to do? Or do they just want testing? Some states don't really care if the students are "up to date" on state curriculum, but they still want the testing done.

  4. Try using the Pass Test system. (Personalized Achievment Summary System). I was homeschooled and my mom used these tests in NC,  and she sent them to the local school district's superintendent. http://www.hewitthomeschooling.com/test/...

This test is only available for grades 3-8, however.

    Other options are:

    Bayside School Services

Donny & Sandy Ball's Bayside School Services offers the do-it-yourself standardized achievement tests, available all year.

    Family Learning Organization

    John Hopkins University

    Seton Home Study School

Standardized tests available for homeschoolers, grades K-12. Tests are easy to administer at home at your convenience. Tests are scored and returned usually in one week.

    Sycamore Tree

The Sycamore Tree offers standardized tests that may be administered in the students' homes. The Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) tests all academic areas including Reading, Language Arts, Spelling, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reference Skills.

    Thurber's Educational Assessments

TEA offers the California Achievement Test (C.A.T./5)®. It is an excellent test for you to use to meet the achievement testing needs for your homeschool.

While I have not looked into these, they are viable options for you.

  5. See if she knows her ABC's, can spell simple words, and can add and subtract easy numbers. Those are the things the little kids in my area know. Maybe thats what she needs to know.

  6. First what state are you in? Most places have support groups or maybe you can find someone in your area that home schools.
