If I'm home schooled junior and senior year of high school, what would I need to do in order to go to a University? I'm guessing my chances are dimmer then just normal high school. My grades are great, but I just have health problems. Do university's look at home schooled students different then normal? Thanks!

  1. You are going to be in demand as a college applicant.

There is a myth, perpetrated by teacher unions and ignorant, frightened schoolers, that there is only one path to college.

In reality, there are multiple paths.  Colleges not only accept homeschooling, they seek homeschooling out.  This includes top universities such as Harvard and Stanford, as well as smaller schools.

You will need to take whatever tests (SAT, ACT, etc) the colleges you apply to require.  It is also a good idea to have one or more community college courses under your belt.  This is not at all unusual for a young adult such as yourself.

  2. Some of the best ones look on HS students as a BETTER bet than normal PS students because they generally have better motivation and study skills.

  3. Why should your chances be dimmer? You'll have the same requirements, which will depend on the university. So, check with the university. Some even have special policies for homeschoolers due to their unique education and you can have alternatives to whatever 'regular' high school students have to do.

  4. Many universities look for home schooled students because they are self starters etc. You need to keep good records of your work, tests, grades etc. That will make it easier. Don't let them tell you that you have to get a GED.

  5. Your chances may actually be better.

Many top colleges actively recruit homeschooled students.

For the most part, you will simply need to do the same as any other student.

Make sure with your homeschooling you continue with a rigorous college prep course of study.

Take the college entrance exams and score well.  Get some college credits under your belt (you can do this online through a number of name-brand universities).

As a Jr. be sure to take the PSAT (practice SAT) - that will give you some test taking experience and put you in the running for National Merit Scholarships.

You may or may not need to keep and present a portfolio.  Whether the college(s) you apply to require it or not - I think it is a good idea and a good way to show that you are an interesting and well rounded person.

So, yes, (many) colleges do look at home schooled students different than normal - in a good way.
