So i'm in 8th grade. Last year in 7th grade a girl in my class left school to be homeschooled. Her mom goes to the Parent/Teacher supply store and gets her 2nd grade work sheets to do. She doens't teacher her anything, hse just gives her a folder with 2nd grade work in it and goes to work. This girl isn't learning anyhting that is required. She hasn't tkaen the US Constitution test or the Illinois Constitution test.

Isn't it against the law to drop out of school at this age. she is only 13. Doens't the state have to keep track of homeschooling children to make sure they are learning the required things? Could her mom be arrested for Child Neglect? Wil she have to be sent back to a school and put in the 7th grade again?

  1. i had a close friend in high school get home schooling. i don't know about getting the material yourself but my old high school gave out the curriculum for you to take home.

  2. When she takes the yearly checkup exam (depending on state), that'll be that.

Not sure if you're just saying stuff to yank chains, but that kid's gonna end up repeating alot of stuff.

  3. Just because her mom gets some things from that store doesn't mean that is all she does.  There are lots of free things on-line and lots of mail order suppliers, and lots of books at the library.  I doubt she is only doing second grade work.

  4. No its not illegal to get out of school at that age! I've been home schooled ALL me life and I Am smart as if not smarter then the boys and girl me age! And How do you know if The mom is giving her 2nd grad work?

  5. It may well be against the law to drop out of school at 13, but homeschooling isn't dropping out.

There are no required things to "learn" for anyone.  No state could guarentee learning.  Plenty of people go thru public schools and have diplomas they can't even read.

It's really difficult to judge what really goes on in any household unless you are living in that household.  What you wrote about sounds absurd, and probably inaccurate.  But, there are some crazy people out there.

There must be some reason that this mother is choosing this educational method.  Maybe the girl was at a 2nd grade level after all those years in public school, if so, would it really be better to send her back there?

Hope it all works out well for your friend :D

  6. I am and have been homeschooled and that is called Unschooling! Thats not what we do! WE ARE NORMAL!

  7. That is really not right. She should be reported.

There's homeschooling and then there's neglect. I think we all know what this situation is.

  8. dats madd weird

  9. unfortunately i don't think the state cares.....i was home schooled for 4th and 5th grade and we fell behind and i didn't even get HALF WAY through the 5th grade when i went back to public school in 6th grade and no-one even said anything and now i'm in 10th and still nothing

  10. Typically a comprehensive test is only needed once a year to make sure standards are met. The mom will not be under the same requirements that the public school is under because she is only teaching her own child/children and she is not burdening the state with her child's education, she is paying for it herself. It is not child neglect and she won't have to be put in the 7th grade again as long as she passes the state achievement tests every year. When tax dollars are not being spent on a child's education the rules are different. They can homeschool however they please and unless the child fails more than one achievement test, then the state can't interfere with these parents and how they want to raise their child.

  11. The other family is doing everything within the law.

You are gossiping, which isn't exactly moral.

I would suggest you do your own schoolwork and keep your nose out of this girl's business.

    All the best.

  12. As a home schooling parent I feel that you have been given alot of incorrect facts. If she is enrolled in an accredited home school program there is a placement test that must be completed before

enrollment. You send all assignments, test , and progress reports to the school's administration office. The school in returns keep all grades on file for an offical transcript and also for your diploma upon completion. Your friend's situation sounds as if she isn't enrolled in any type of program. If she was to ever return to public school she would be required to take another placement test to determine her grade level. Maybe there are some areas of miscommunication with your friend because I don't understand why a parent would deliberately

set there child's education back. So try to see if this is the case than maybe you can help her by getting some of your materials to her.

    BE BLESSED

  13. I happen to be home schooled and you have to get permission from your school district to be home schooled. They send you a letter proving that you are legally educating your child at home, and then you home school. After that, every odd year (for example 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th grades, etc.) you have to get tested to make sure you're learning what you need to know for your grade level. If you're not, then they make you go back to regular school. And no, I don't think you can legally drop out at age 13.
