Got many good and some silly responses to this question* about a novel distinction between Ethics and Morality; morality is like a planet rotating on its own axis, whereas ethics is like the planets orbiting around the sun - they are interdependent and in a mutual relationship. They are not synonyms but when they are used that way, ambiguity leads to abuse by the selfish. *Is this distinction a valuable contribution?

  1. morals are based on cultural upbringing, while ethics is more likely to be tried to be applied universally.

  2. Morality (a moral code) is a basic standard of right and wrong.

Ethics is the application of one's moral code (and I would add conscience) to various situations.

To illustrate: morality is like having a basic understanding of algebra; while ethics is like using that basic knowledge of algebra to solve a specific equation.

  3. Seems like you are not really looking for a definition. Situational ethics is not really "ethics" at all but an excuse to suspend accepted norms of behavior.

These two terms used in tandem can be confusing and you make a very valuable contribution and clarification with the analogy of planets orbiting around the sun (ethics) and a planet rotating on its axis (morality).

    Very cool indeed!
