Question:

Homeschooling for High School?

I'm going to be homeschooled all throughout High School. When a form, such as a college application, asks what H.S. I graduated from, what do I say?

I'm going to use the ABeka curriculum and hopefully graduate from Pensacola Christian Academy (if you use their curriculum throughout H.S., they allow you to get a deploma and participate in the ceremony).

Thank you and God bless.

  1. If they give you a diploma from the Pensacola Christian Academy then that is the school that you would put on your application. You also would put that on your SAT testing for school.

Many colleges except homeschool. They look at the person as a whole, like SAT scores, what sports or activities that you are in.

  2. My son has been homeschooled since 8th grade. In high school we enrolled him in the Pennsylvania Cyber charter school, an on-line school that uses a number of different curriculum packages. Their whole idea is to leave the choice of curricula to the parents and children.

The school has been very good about providing all of the requirements for graduation in Pennsylvania and providing a valid high school diploma.

I have talked to a few colleges and they seem a bit skeptical about the on-line cyber school idea. They are certainly willing to accept the diploma, but they have said thy would put a bit more weight than usual on the SAT scores. Still, they all said they would be happier with a valid diploma than they would be with just home school.

They also said that they are very concerned that the young person entering college is prepared from a social point of view; that is, that he or she can handle the responsibility of attending classes outside the home and doing homework and preparing for exams without the direct supervision of parents.

From our experience as home-school parents, we think this is very wise. The transition from a home environment to college will be different and more of a streetch than that from high school.

My advice is to talk to the folks at Pensacola Christian academy. Ask them about their experiences with different colleges, and ask a lot of questions. Get their advice about this question.

Also, talk to the admissions people at different colleges and explain your own situation. I don't think you will not have to identify yourself; just say you are a potential applicant who has been going to high school at home under the supervision of the Pensacola school.

My educated guess is that both the school and the colleges will say to identify Pensacola as your high school.

God bless you and lots of luck with college admissions.

  3. Just say you were home schooled. Usually, colleges like to get homeschoolers because they're very well educated. I'm going through NARS (North Atlantic Regional Schools) so I'll get a HS diploma my Sr year. If you ever want to go to a different school, I'd start going through NARS just in case (as long as you have good grades, you'll be able to go anywhere since you have an in-hand diploma). Have a great time at college.

  4. If you are going to go through the formal program and get their diploma, then you would put the academy name.

If you do it on your own, not through an academy, you can just put "homeschooled".

  5. DO NOT PUT HOMESCHOOLED.  If you graduate with them, you put down that school name.  If you do not, you name your homeschool yourself, (do not put the word homeschool in the name you give it) and that is the name you list.
