Just moved to Louisiana and recently started homeschooling my son. I chose the home study option (did anyone else?)and was loooking to see what some of the things others do-what things to log, how much time is a typical day. We do it Mon-Fri and about 4-5 hrs max. He's in 2nd grade. I looked at HSLDA but thats just an overview. Hope to get into a hs group soon. Thanks for any info.

  1. I live in La and we used the option 2. There is no documentation for you and you don't need to turn anything in all I have to do is write a letter to the state to inform them that we are home schooling. If you have any questions you can e-mail me and I will be glad to answer them. Where in La are you? St Tammany has an excellent hs group!

  2. Pay no attention to Drama Bug, she is obviously ill informed  like so many other ignorant answerer's.

Have you seen this web site?

    http://www.la-home-education.com/

Good luck on this incredibly rewarding adventure.

  3. Home schooling is a tremendously bad idea.  How do you expect your son to learn how to interract with others?  I hope you at least put him in group sports and activities.

  4. Where in LA? I homeschool my 9 year old son. I am in NW LA and have a homeschool group with over 70 families and we love to exchange info on the message board and also in person, such as at Park Day tomorrow if you are in this area.

If you are in another area, there are also great groups throughout the state. Search yahoo groups for more options.

We use the other option- Private School Law

(http://www.chefofla.org/ click on FAQ) and we are Unschoolers, so I am probably not much help with how long a child should sit and do lessons. But I have some books that I would recommend:

Homeschooling Book of Answers by Linda Dobson

    Homeschool Handbook by Mary Griffith

anything by Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moore and anything by John Holt.

Again, if you are in the S'port/Bossier or surrounding area we would love to have you join us at the park tomorrow.

You can get directions by emailing me or checking my hs message for this area http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sportkidsc...

Welcome to Louisiana and welcome to homeschooling.

It is not unusual for new homeschoolers to feel the need to do a lot of "school" to prove that they are meeting standards. Just remember that those are someone else's standards and not necessarily yours. As you learn more and spend more time homeschooling and reading about homeschooling and time away from the public school mindset (of standardization and their need to meet and show performance levels to a variety of people and organizations) and  you spend time with other homeschoolers you will just naturally relax and feel comfortable and confident that your child is learning at a pace that is good for both of you.

Remember, you taught him to walk and talk and use the toilet and feed himself, etc., etc. You are perfectly qualified to observe him and make decisions about what he needs to learn and then teach those things to him.
