For the past couple years my brother has struggled with going to school. He just doesn't go anymore so we're trying homeschool. How do we get started? He's my mother's responsibility but I'm going to teach him. We live in Utah so what do I need to know? Where do we get started?

  1. This link has exactly what your looking for....

  2. Contact the dept. of education where you live. That's where I started. I homeschooled my son through half of 7th and all of 8th grade. It's a rough age for most kids.

  3. Contact the School District you live in and ask them for the home school Packets.

  4. Here are Utah's homeschool laws.

You may also want to find a home school group in your area where you can get advice.  Here's a Christian state organization.

From there you will need to choose a curriculum.  Online homeschooling might work out for you if he is self-motivated to complete his work.

  5. I've homeschooled my brother (10-12th grades) and --- Mom took care of the legal aspect, but I handled most of the curriculum and basic teaching

First, I found out what my brother's goals were.  He wanted to go to college and study a specific program there.

We kept with "school at home" since both of us were most comfortable with that.

He attended "class" 3 days a week.  I  planned his class days as 15 minutes of instruction, 15 minutes of inclass work (extra reading for English....but not a whole lot)  and his home days he had approximately 1/2 hour for homework in each subject.

He and I worked through AP texts and some boughten courses, however, we did not go through an online system...just worked through the Math and Science books.

We did AP texts  (and the AP tests) so that he could advance more quickly to college.

We also studied French, Art, and  a couple of other interests.

His senior year, he went to community college, and his transition into a University went smoothly.  (He picked up a scholarship based on his achievements)

However, my brother, mother, and I planned it around his interests.  That planning was key.  It led him to care about his education...it was now HIS and he knew it was tailored to him.  That matters.

Good Luck.  It can be a lot of fun.  You will work it out for you & him  :)

PS most homeschooling stuff is geared towards "parents" -- which can be nice.  You get to let Mom handle the "why we homeschool" for the rest of the world, and you get to focus on the fun part--learning!
