  1. Your comment "ridiculously priced" is relative.  One person's definition might be $500 and other's $5000.

You are going to be hard pressed to find an "affordable" online high school.  Most legitimate ones (like Keystone) cost around (or more) $350/semester/course (0.5 credit).

If you do private HS'ing your parents can issue you a diploma.  You don't have to get all your courses in one place.  You can just keep a transcript and a portfolio of your work.  If you want to go to college, then add the ACT and/or SAT test to that.  You don't need to get your G.E.D.

A better option is to go ahead and start at a community college.  The courses will be much cheaper *and* you can get dual credit (high school and college).  You might have to start with some non-credit courses, but they'll still be cheaper than a private online high school.

Here are some good online high schools - where you can take one class, or all your needed classes (in which case, the school will issue you a diploma).

  2. Here is an organization that offers some free online courses:

    http://www.hippocampus.org/

Your parents can create a transcript and issue you a diploma (free) or you can use a service (usually paid).

There aren't any free online charter schools in NY that I know of, but you can work through the courses above and earn credits, and it will save you money for the other classes that you need to take and/or have to pay money for.

If you are diligent and an independent learner...

Most local colleges also offer some courses online. As a homeschool student you have the flexibility of taking college level courses while still in high school - something that may interest you if you need to save money. The credit you earn will apply to your high school diploma and may apply (depending on the college) to your college degree.

Some credits transfer, some do not, depending on the school, so make sure you ask before taking a course for dual credit.

istudysmart.com offers very affordable courses that you can take in high school.

  3. You said New York, so I am restricting my advice specifically to your state:  Check out these sites, and use their contact information to speak to someone about your situation.
