Question:

Homeschooling options?

We want to pull our child out of school and have her homeschooled (she is being sexually harassed and touched inappropriately by other boys). My wife is petrified of homeschooling her (she doesn't think she is adequate enough) but I know there are at home computer programs that do most of the teaching for you. Can you recommend any computer programs for elementary-aged children?

Thank you for your help!

  1. switched on school house is awesome I was homeschooled for 2 yrs. I did it myself because everything is graded and done in workbooks all your wife has to do is check her answers. The answer book comes with it. It was very easy to do. Its k12 also

  2. I totally agree with "sandernmb".  K12 is one of *the best* curriculums.  There still needs to be direct parental input for grades Kdg-2nd, but starting in 3rd grade, the student can start easing into independent, self-taught work.

My son started K12 at age 5 and he's now 10 and we *love* it.  The online, dynamic, planning & progress pages are soooo nice - especially when you're beginning your homeschool journey.  The teaching plans and instruction are great and are scripted (for the ones you teach to the student), so you can follow along, or you can ad lib.

K12 is very multi-sensory, and so it teaches to all learning styles.  You can pick and choose activities to meet your child's style.  The content is both broad and deep.

I recommend you attend one of K12's online "open houses" to see it "in action".  Also, compare K12's scope & sequences to other curriculua and you'll be surprised :-).

  3. Do you definitely want computer based programs? The reason I ask is I thought that this would be a solution when I started home schooling as well. I tried to do the Switched On Schoolhouse from Alpha Omega and it was like torture for my daughter to be in front of the computer for that long of a time. She learned better from reading and reviewing with me and doing some "workbook" and notebook activities.

I would encourage your wife that she is probably more than adequate. Remind her that all the curriculum's for home school come with a teachers key! If you would like some specific recommendations (that have worked for us), please feel free to email me.

edit- Umm, maybe I am being a bit touchy, but what have I said to merit a thumbs down? I didn't say anything wrong, just trying to encourage the mother here. Wow!

  4. The last person was right. Don't wait another second to remove her from the school system. They are not there to help or protect your children. They are there to pump out robots for the next generation work force. Homeschooling is not hard. You can use any method you want to learn or pick and choose as it works for your child. Everyone learns things at a different speed and in their own time. Learning cannot be forced. Here are some links to help get you started.

Also, make sure you follow the laws for your state about homeschooling. Call the school district or go to their website for more info. This will keep it all legal, Know your and your childs rights first and foremost. I would report this to the police as well so other children won't have to go through it with the same bully.

  5. I homeschool my son and we use A Beka.  We used them before in 3rd grade and they were wonderful.  We put my son back in school and we still had problems with other students so I have taken him back out, we are now in 5th grade.  Tell your wife not to worry.  There are options with A Beka.  They have a DVD program and it tells you which DVD to put in on a daily basis and your child would watch her teacher on TV teaching a class (DVD's are a little outdated but not so bad that they don't use them)  Anyway, they send you ALL the materials you need and they would send your wife the answer books so that she can check your daughters work.  Its all very easy.  I was nervous at first but I now have the home school curriculum where I teach him.  They send me all the teacher books and its laid out what to do on a daily basis and he has all of his books included tests and quizes and of course I also have the answer keys.

If you don't like the DVD option or the option for you to be the teacher, they have an online curriculum.  If you do home school, I recommend them!

  6. \First things first.

Your daughter is being sexually assaulted (let's call it what it is, rather than beating around the bush).

If your wife had a job where she was being sexually assaulted, she wouldn't let the door hit her on the way out.

Get your daughter out of that school.  Now.

You have many options, including, but not limited to, online programs.  You need to be an active part of her education as well.

  7. There is a wonderful homeschool curriculum which uses some online content, together with books and texts.  It is the most rigorous and rich program I have seen.  You can find information about it here:

One of the best things, especially for a new homeschooling family, is that it takes a lot of the 'guess work' out of teaching.  You have the materials, teacher's guides and everything you need in order to give your child an amazing education.

Pulling your daughter out of that situation is the right thing for your family.  Good luck with your journey.
