1. Basically it's what happens when parents take direct responsibility for the education of their children.

Depending on their preferences and local laws this can mean anything using a curriculum designed by someone else, through making up their own, to a totally informal, child lead approach called unschooling or autonomous education.

The first step is to research the laws where you live and the various approaches so you can pick the one you think will work best for your family.

  2. Homeschooling is teaching your child(ren) at home.

You have to either go to the school and fill out a form to inform them of your choice or send them a notice of intent fourteen days prior to starting your home schooling program, depending on the district you are in.  You also need to keep attendance and records, and have your child evaluated once a year through a certified teacher or a nationally excepted standardized test, again depending on the district.  Search yahoo for home school laws for your state and call your school district to see if they have any requirements to add or tips.  Some schools are extremely helpful and others are uninformed on the subject.  Requirements can very from district to district within a state.

We find all of our subjects’ curriculum online through various sources.  Most of our materials are bought on eBay, trying to save money.  Rainbowresource.com is another helpful place to find what you need.  When searching on eBay I just type that particular subject and the grade level and try to choose what I think will best suit our needs.  I.e.: Science fifth grade.

I enjoy home schooling because it gives us more freedom to explore different interests, while still staying on track with needed knowledge.  I also enjoy knowing my child is in a safe environment and not being exposed with out my guidance to things that steal children’s innocence away too soon.

The final thing you will need to possess is patients.  A lot of patients.  Remember the whole idea of teaching anyone something is that they need to learn it, they will not automatically know it.  It is also good to keep in mind that everyone has a bad day now and then, including kids.  Those are good days to take a holiday.  The rewards far out weigh the complications.

Homeschooling is similar to doing your homework. You have assignments, do research with books or online, complete assignments and turn them in.

  4.
Homeschooling (also called home education), home learning or homeschool – is the education of children at home, typically by parents or professional tutors, rather than in a public or private school.

Although prior to the introduction of compulsory school attendance laws, most childhood education occurred within the family or community, homeschooling in the modern sense is an alternative in developed countries to formal education........
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeschooli...

Homeschooling is simply what happens when your parents, rather than your local school district, assume responsibility for providing you with your education/schooling.

You don't 'sign up' as such - you need to gain the agreement of your parent(s) who then de-register you from school/don't enrol you in school. Depending on the local jurisdiction, your parents may or may not then be required to (or given the option to) register as homeschoolers.

How do you get the work? You & your parents can organise and plan your own curriculum; you can buy a ready made curriculum to follow; or, like my family, you can homeschool without any curriculum.
