Question:

Homeschooling through Pre-School?

I would love to homeschool my daughter. At this point, I feel that our family could not afford for me to stop working to do this since my husband is just starting his own business. She is starting pre-school in the fall. It is only 2 days a week for 2.5 hours. I would really like to get her in a pre-school that is everyday, but I cannot due to travel. This pre-school is highly recommended though, we had to register last fall for this year for the 3 year old class, and will register this year for next year. I do want to work with her at home to help her excel. Anybody have any ideas on things to work on ?

  1. Relax darling. Pre-school doesn't require much. Hanging around in the same room as other kids, playing, singing and learning to sit quietly on the mat. I would assume you're already pre-school type stuff at home. Play with playdough, learn letters, numbers and shapes. Sing songs, read stories, make mess, go to the playground. That's pretty much it. There really isn't much that a pre-school kid needs to excel at. This age is all about exploring the world and having fun. Pushing kids into early academics hinders, it doesn't help. It burns them out, teaches them it's all "too hard" or they are "too dumb" to learn it. If you think your child is ready for academics, introduce some simple maths and phonics. You'll find out very quickly whether she is ready or not, and how long her enthusiasm lasts. The key, at this age, is to give them slightly less academics than they want. That way, you can be sure you aren't overdoing it, but you keep them enthusiasic over it. Remember, you can do things like art and music appreciation, gardening, cooking and call them school, if that's what your child likes.

In my opinion, if pre-school is being presented as something one has to "pass" or get an "A" at, it's something I'd be running from!

  2. Try http://www.Sonlight.com They have an excellent preschool curriculum. You can afterschool homeschool her while she attends preschool.

  3. Instead of worrying about your child excelling, how about helping her to be herself, without regard for where she is compared to others?
