Question:

Homesick and lonely in a new city

Moved to a new city for an engineering internship. Boyfriend and I are both busy and have conflicting work schedules. We do not see each other often and it gets to me sometimes, but that is life. Inspection work on a worksite makes it hard for me to make friends. I try going to the gym after work on most days if I'm not too tired. Work schedule is tiresome (10 hour days from 7PM to 5PM) 2 hours drive to and from work for 7 days a week. Missing family and friend and way of life back home. Have been here since May 2008, and will be leaving in Sept. Help please!

  1. i used to live in the country but my family moved into the city. i was home sick for 2 weeks now i feel good living in the city. u be fine it just takes some time.

  2. go the **** home sooner.

  3. sleep longer. time will go by faster if you only eat, sleep, m********e, and work.

  4. There's not much you can do. Just keep talking to people, make new friends, and don't isolate yourself. You have a two hour drive to and from work---take advantage of that and call people just to chat.

I don't have much experience in this, but I can say that all you have to do is keep going. You'll be leaving in September. Just keep breathing, keep talking, keep living.

  5. hold on until september, its not too far away...take a day off,go to see family and make sure the boyfriend tags along since you dont see him much, make friends at the gym or around where you live:)

  6. Hey, what you're experiencing is common.  When we get homesick, we long for the familiar.  You moved to a new city, an unfamiliar environment.  You've been away from home for about, what, 2 months?  You know what's going to happen to you?

Over time, you will become less homesick.  Those feelings you have about dread, hopelessness, and separation anxiety will diminish.    Eventually, *poof*, they'll be gone for good.  You'll meet new people, make new friends.  You'll be fine.  Just try to stay busy.

I suggest you find ways of communicating with your friends and boyfriend.  You have a computer, why don't you use IM & email to bridge the gap between you and your loved ones.  I'm sure you're doing that already.  If you're in an engineering internship, you must be smart.

    Hope this helps.  Good luck!

  7. Two websites to go to. Try www.yelp.com. This sight is for young urban professionals on stuff to do in the city.

Also try www.meetup.com. This sight is to meet other people of similar interests. Hope you find something!
