Hometown to roll out royal reception in honour of US Open Champ Rory McIlroy
Following in the footsteps of his countryman and compatriot Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy has decided to pull out from the French Open scheduled next week as he prepares to drown himself in the returns of his massive victory at the US Open. McDowell did
the same thing last year when he spent almost three weeks touring his country like a king and appearing in various TV shows across Ireland.
McDowell returned to competitive golf at the Scottish Open, however, McIlroy has revealed that he will not be swinging clubs any sooner than the Open Championship scheduled at Sandwich from July 14-17.
French Open is set to tee-off next week and World number three Martin Kaymer will be the only player from the Top 10 in OWGR to be participating in the event. He will be facing the defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez and long-hitting American Bubba Watson
at Le Golf National course near Paris, as the few notable contenders. The course has also been selected as the venue for the Ryder Cup in 2018.
McIlroy will set out on a whirlwind tour of Ireland and UK, and will be seen in several events and dinners hosted in his honour. The 22-years-old US Open champion will be heading to his childhood course, Holywood Golf Club in Co Down on Wednesday, June 22,
where he will be accorded a royal welcome. The town is yet to finalize the details of the public celebration which will be rolled out on McIlroy’s arrival.
One of the junior organizers at the club, Philip Brady jokingly remarked, "You would have thought they could have just left the trophy in Northern Ireland to save Rory paying the excess baggage to bring it back home again."
McIlroy, became the second Northern Irishman to win the title, replicating Graeme McDowell’s stunning victory last year. He won with a jaw-dropping margin of eight shots to the nearest contender and also became the youngest player to win the event since
1923. He broke the all time lowest record of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus to win the title.
McIlroy was also the only player in the history of the event to card the lowest score till the halfway mark.
