Homewood-Flossmoor boy’s volleyball team beats Shepard 2-1 in Oak Forest regional quarter-final
The Oak Forest regional quarter-final was held on Monday, May 23rd between two competitive teams, Homewood-Flossmoor and Shepard. The team that was finally able to emerge as victor when the show finished was Homewood-Flossmoor as they staked a
claim to the semi-final of the regional event.
The Vikings were able to secure a 2-1 win before almost letting the match get out of their hands in the second set of the game. By the time the Vikings were able to take a sigh of relief, the score board displayed the following final set scores: 25-17, 23-25
and 25-22.
The Homewood-Flossmoor record shows their overall wins to be seven in all. This is accompanied by 28 defeats. Compared to the overall season record of the Vikings, Shepard has not done any better. The number of times that Shepard has been able to tally wins
total to be six. These victories have been bagged at the cost of suffering 17 losses.
The first set of the match went well for the Vikings. They were able to get themselves a lead early on and kept Shepard under pressure all through the set. The key aspect of the Vikings’ strength in the opening set of the match was their service aces. Shepard
could not properly pick up the serves rained down on them as a result of which they lost the first set of the game to the Vikings, 25-17.
Winning the initial set got the Vikings in a somewhat laid back attitude as they seemed a different team in the second set. The Vikings made a total of 16 errors, all of which were unforced. As a result, it became an easy job for Shepard to bag the second
set of the game at 25-23.
The third set of the game did not start well for the Vikings and Shepard was able to take the lead early on at 9-4. However, the Vikings did not let the Shepards go too far and were able to tie the score at 15-15. After that, the Vikings sealed the deal
by taking the third set of the game at 25-22.
After his team had bagged themselves a win, the Vikings coach Brandon Cotter commented, “Our problem the entire season is we’ll come out and play a great first game. We get happy and think that’s good. We come out with just not the same intensity. Typically
in third games we’ve struggled, and we can’t get back to that first game. We played well enough to pull it out.”
The Vikings squad will be happy to have made it into the semi-finals but they will need to play even better volleyball if they expect to make it to the final of the tournament.
