Homework Misery?

Bascially, I have this loong quote that goes on for about 4 lines. My teacher says I should indent it but I don't know what that is.

How do I indent a long quote and give me an example! Thanks.

“A man who had been soaked in water and smothered in mud, and lamed by stones, and cut by flints, and stung by nettles, and torn by brains: who limped and shivered and glared and growled”.

Thats the quote! ^

  1. A long quote is indented on both sides to set it apart from the rest of your paper. Do not use quotation marks around it because the indentation tells the reader that it is a quote. Some teachers want you to use single spacing for a long quote, also. Ask your teacher if she prefers that form. Leave extra space above and below the quote.

  2. Indentation is when you move text away from the left hand margin. It's done for the first line of a new paragraph, when laying out lists or bulletpoints and when inserting long quotes.

Your teacher is asking you to break the quote off from the body of text above and below (as you have done) and move it towards the right slightly.

This is standard practice for any quote that is longer than a few words.

Indent with the TAB key rather than spaces in order to make formatting the alignment easier. One tab should be enough.

  3. the exam board and your teacher will know the text your studying, so you can abbrev like this

    "a man who had been soaked in water . . . . . . glared and growled"

by adding the dots in they'll know you mean everything in between as well.

    hope this helps :)
