Question:

Homework help? (Math)?

I'm pretty confused here. I have 2 problems I don't get for homework.

Directions: Describe the method used to estimate the sum, difference, product or quotient. Then describe a better method and revise the estimate.

First: 19 x 2 = 20 x 0 = 0.

How does 19 x 2 = 20? (The = sign is squiggly)

2. 148 + 138 (squiggly =) 100 + 100 = 200.

Any help?

  1. You lost me with the squiggly.  does it look like this ~?

O okay. well the first question is asking whats wrong.  These are both rounding questions.  The first one they rounded down instead of up. it should be 20 and the answer would be 40.

    The second one they needed to round up.150 + 140 = 290.

Don't worry 6th grade math will get easier. 7th grade is like even easier. 8th too, but not 9th and 10th is just the same as 6th 7th and 8th. Sorry I'm going on and on about this, good luck with math homework!

  2. well the first question basically means how is the question incorrect, it's not a good way because they rounded down the 2 to 0 instead of the 19 into a 20. so the answer for the first one should really be 40 cause 20 x 2 = 40.

The second one is just as simple.they took 148 and rounded down a lot to get 100. they should have rounded both numbers to the nearest tens, getting 150 + 140 = 290. Hope it helped =)

p.s the squiggly sign means "approximently"

  3. The squiggly symbol means "approximately equal to".

    Such as saying 100 + 99 ~  200.

In each of your two problems, the numbers (38 and 0) and (286 and 200) are not even close!

Even then, I'm not entirely sure what the problem is asking you to do!
