hey,

we put a piece of magnesium in some HCl (Hydrochloric Acid) and the test tube started smoking.

why was this?

Magnesium reacts with the HCl to give H2 gas. H2 is colorless but the "smoke" has to do H2 leaving the test tube and caryying matter (?H2O) along with it.
