  1. Cations cannot exist without the presence of an anion.  Thus, Na+ would never exist ON ITS OWN (but wouold exist if it was present with say Cl- ions).

    Alkali metals, being in group I of the table of elements, generally have a charge of +1 while alkaline earth metals (group II), have a charge of +2.

    I don't really understand what you mean by having a complete set of VEs.

    Normally, Ca has 2 valence electrons

    Sodium has 1

    Potassium has 1

    Magnesium has 2

    Lithium has 1
