  1. Citicop had a great answer.  I would add to study criminal justice while at college.   I just noticed some colleges are adding CSI type classes and those should help also.

  2. 1.) Finish High School

2.) Go to College, get 4 year degree of your choice

3.) Get hired as a Police Officer

4.) Spend 3-5 years learning the job of Law Enforcement

5.) Do #4 better than other people, get recognized for your work.

    6.) Get promoted/transfered to a detective position

7.) Spend a year or two learning investigations

8.) Excel at #7 like you did at #4

    9.) Get promoted/transfered to homicide

  3. Well citicop about nailed it.

You can also do just two years college, most departments require 60 semester hours to get on. After getting on the job finish up. You see most departments will help you pay for college in some way. ( I finished my BA and Masters on my department's dime).

The suggestion of taking CJ for a minor is great. As a major it is really not that useful. Critical thinking skills are what a detective needs to develop. Most of the liberal arts majors would help, especially philosophy but the psych suggestion is good to.

You will learn as much and more CSI stuff you need on the job, most departments send you to the schools or require continuing education. That technical stuff changes daily, the basics remain the same.

  4. Above answers are great.....however minor in CJ and major in management or psychology
