Australopithecus: They were hominids not human - like apes.



Early humans are known as hominids. Australopithecus was the first human-like creature, that lived in Africa about 5 million years ago. Homo erectus had brains that ranged from 800-1200 ccs.  1200 ccs is in the low end of normal for a Homo sapiens.

It sounds like you're talking about australopithecines.  If it MUST be a species of Homo, the only possibility is Homo habilis.

I would say that Homo Floresiensis, the recently discovered so called Hobbit in Indonesia is the only one to qualify since its brain is about 400 cc.  I like to think that all members of the genus homo are apes including ourselves.  It makes everything a little clearer when we don't arbitrarily separate ourselves from our ape relatives.
