  1. Generally no in most areas.

Homeschool is designed for parental supervision, that means the indivudal's parent.  It's a parenting right.

To do a group thing establishes a formal school and that is regulated by state law and requires licenses, certification of those in charge.

  2. The short answer is yes.  In which state do you live?  Typically, parents must provide for a certain number of hours of education for their children.  Some states (like mine) have a very liberal interpretation of how those hours are provided.  Others (like PA) are extremely strict.

  3. That depends. Do you or your friend have any teaching experience? Are you knowledegeable as to the curriculum adopted by your state that your children will need to know to get into college? Also, what are you reasons for home schooling? Are you mad at the local school or is you local school not accredited? Do you know anything about teaching strategies and how to apply them? Some home schooled kids do very well, but the bulk of them struggle academically when they enter public school or colleges. They definitely struggle in social settings with their peers. I see it all the time. Home schooled kids come into a social setting and are outcasts because they have no social skills and no social ties with their peers. You may be fine and you children may be fine, but if they are, they will be the exception to the rule.

  4. It depends on several factors.  First of all, the state that you live in.  Some states allow for someone to teach children that are not their own, but other states don't allow this.

Second, obviously, do both sets of parents approve?  Which one would provide the instruction?  Or are you both possibly old enough to self-instruct in most subjects?  Or if you want to go the high-tech route, would you both enroll in the same or different "online/correspondence/etc" schools?

Two-family homeschooling would require extra cooperation and planning to make sure that everything goes smoothly.  Boundaries and guidelines and expectations must be laid out right from the start, to prevent misunderstandings and tension later on.

And by the way, don't listen to the first poster.  He/she is completely wrong about homeschooling statistics.  Contrary to what he says, homeschooled students outperform publicly schooled peers in every area, INCLUDING socialization!  And I've heard college professors say that former homeschooled students needed less remediation and were better socialized than most college kids.  Socialization means much more than just interacting with your own age group, which is just about all you can get in a ps.  There will be no other time in your life when you're surrounded by only people your own age--it's unnatural socialization at best.  Just get active in extracurriculars and groups, and everything will be fine!
