Honda Civic 1998 Steering Shakes on Breaking?

I have a Honda Civic 1998 whose Steering Shakes on Braking. This is noticed specially on speeds more than 40 mph. If I brake at 40mph, the shaking is less as compared to when i brake at 70 mph. I know that the rotors have to be changed alongwith brake pads but I was advised that i need to get the calipers changed as well as they were the cause of rotors getting warped. Was i advised correctly by the mechanic?

Can this shake on brake also be caused by some link rod malfunction?

  1. your mecanic may be correct, but it could be the abs system too.

  2. It could be the pads, calipers or disks, but you should not rule out the wheel bearings as well.

  3. you should first get an alignment, then see if the problem persists.

If it does, your brake pads are very worn down, and get hot causing your rotors in the front to warp. this could be expensive if you don't have it takin care of fast. I would take it to a japenese mechanic, or better yet a honda/acura dealership and service center

  4. Buy a real car, and you wouldn't have that problem

    I am alpha

  5.   No, that is definitly caused by your brakes.  Every time that has happened to me a good brake job has fixed it.  Don't argue with a mechanic, you need good brakes and it would take another mechanic's opinion to argue the point.  What is worth more, your safety or your money?

  6. It sounds to me like you need your rotors turned down and new pads. There is no way or knowing for sure if you needed new calipers, but it is a fairly common scam to replace them when there is nothing wrong with them. Of all the years of working on my own vehicles, I have never had a caliper that actually needed replacing. Usually they just need to be cleaned, and at the very worst, they need new seals and a bore hone.

I have been doing most of my own repairs for the last 25 years of driving, so I am not an acutal mechanic, but I actually trust my own wrenching skills more than I do some shops.

For really big repairs, I still send it in, but there isn't much I won't tackle myself.

  7. You warped the brakes by getting them to hot.

    You should replace them.

  8. i would be inclined to think you should get another opinion. it could be simple as a bump on a tire(front) or your suspension. good luck.

  9. it may be that your rotors are warped and need replacing, but replacing the calipers is ridiculous. if it still does it with new rotors, you may have worn out tie rod ends. that's what i had with my '95 Civic that did the same thing.
