Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli tops incident-filled FP1 of German Grand Prix – MotoGP news
San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli topped the incident-filled first free practice session for the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland.
The start of the German race weekend witnessed five accidents on Friday, July 15, 2011.
However, the day went on and Marco Simoncelli managed to hit the top of the time sheet with his best effort of 1:22.823 seconds and a top speed of 277.5 Km/h. His teammate Hiroshi Aoyama was struggling to speed up and managed a 15th place, more
than three seconds behind his Italian teammate.
The second spot was occupied by championship leader Casey Stoner who clocked his best time of 1:23.004 seconds, however, he hit top a speed of 284.4 Km/h. After his accident in the first 20 minutes from the start of the session, he scored the second place
in the last few moments of the session. Stoner’s teammates Andrea Dovizioso was the fifth fastest on the time sheet and Dani Pedrosa covered the 11th spot in FP1 results.
Jorge Lorenzo was third fastest with his Yamaha YZR-M1 with 1:23.046 seconds on the time sheet. Lorenzo’s teammate Ben Spies was ninth on the FP1 time sheet. Nicky Hayden scored the fourth spot of the time sheet while his teammate, Valentino Rossi was 14th
in the final time sheet after an accident.
The riders to suffer a crash included the first man on the track Casey Stoner and teammate Dani Pedrosa, Ducati rider Valentino Rossi and LCR Honda team rider Toni Elias. All the riders were trapped at turn 11 of the Sachsenring circuit which is a fast-paced
right hand corner flowing downhill.
Among all the riders who fell at turn11, Rossi faced a severe fall, heading for a medical check up later. However, he was safe with minor injuries on his right arm.
Toni Elias faced another accident on turn 1 and damaged his primary bike. Later he continued on his second bike to complete the first practice session of the weekend.
Dani Pedrosa also faced a fall but luckily, he escaped without any injury which could have ruined the remainder of his session.
