Question:

Honda Prelude Check Engine Light?

I had a check engine light on. Took it to autozone, they let me use the scanner and I deleted the codes. It was a P0700 and P0740 code. I understand these are transmission and torque converter problem codes. Now I plan to get this checked, but in the mean time I would like to pass my inspection first. Does the deleting the codes allow me to pass inspection? I know that sometimes the computer resets and I would have to complete a drive cycle before I could pass inspection but if the light comes back on I won't be able to pass. If anyone has any ideas or advice, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

  1. Emission laws are different in every state. I thought that having a "check Engine" light on would keep me from passing. But here in WI they just ended up doing a manual test because the computer plug test failed. As long as the light isn't on during your test the the code isn't present. But it will eventually come back. You can also clear them by disconnecting the negative battery cable (you will have to reset radio).

    Hope this helps

  2. you got p0740, your transmission is junk. gone. replace it. no fix. If it's shifting, it shouldn't code just yet. p0700 just tells u it''s in the transmission.

  3. the problem is with the torque converter clutch not locking up.  clearing the code will probably not get you through an inspection as the likelyhood is it will come back before the test.  You can always try, but the odds are strong the code will reset before the test is completed.

the code comes on for one of three reasons.  the first is that the fluid passage for the tcc circuit is restricted.  Flushing the trans may clear the passage.  Honda doesn't condone flushing transmissions because they can't control the flushing process but it will work if that's the cause.

the diagnostic procedure calls for replacing the lock up solenoid set then seeing if the code comes back.  if it doesn't then the trans will have to be replaced as its terminal internal slippage.

If it were my car I would do a flush first and filter the fluid that comes out during the flushing process to see how much debris is in the fluid.  If its a lot then the chances are the trans has significant internal damage.  if its a little then the problem may be solved with either just the flush or the solenoid replacement.

    hope that helps

  4. Well, it's not a disaster if it comes back on right? It's not like they seize the car and crush it. If the lights stay off, you're golden. If they come on again, you need to get it fixed. You may want to get a transmission service which, if it's like most cars I've seen in the US, has never been done. It's just a powered fluid and filter change. You need a place that has a machine. An older place that just drains the old fluid and pours in more won't cut it.

  5. p0740 is honda death code. you need a new tranny.
