Question:

Honda V45 Magna Shifting Problems?

I own a 1983 Honda V45 Magna. Let's say I'm driving at 60mph on a highway. Now if I reach a red light or a stop sign after I leave the higway, I have to put it back into first gear. However, the motorcycle automatically pops into 5th gear.

Any help?

  2. Let me see if I understand you correctly, you're in 5th, you downshift into 4th, 3rd, 2nd and then 1st.  You take off in first and it jumps into fifth?

I've never worked on a Magna tranny, but probably the only way it could do that is if the detent ball on the shifting drum isn't making good contact because of a broken spring behind the ball.  Sounds like you need to get to the shifting arm that rotates the drum (on the outside of the engine behind a cover, not inside) and check out the arm, the springs on it and see if the shifting drum clicks into position when shifting rather than rotating easily.  The old Hondas had a big nut affair on top of the transmission which held the detent ball and spring in place.  Don't nkow about yours.
