  1. easy fix..its leaking in between the shaft and the seal...just needs a new rubberseal fitted...pop out the old,in with the new...seal is £,just done one yesterday.

  2. would be a pain in the butt to fix yourself. take it to the shop

  3. this is a fairly common problem on some of the earlier model water cooled 2 stroke engines... and not too difficult to replace on the older Hondas...

basically, the older bikes did not have any type of a weep hole between the water pump water seal and the water pump oil seal.  so when the water seal started leaking, there as no place for the water to go other than on down the shaft to the oil seal... typically, when one went out, the other went out shortly thereafter.  starting in the late 90s / early 2000s, manufacturers added a small weep hole between these two seals so when the water seal went out, it leaked outside the engine instead of into the oil...

so, you need to replace BOTH the water seal & the oil seal...  should be 3-4 screws to remove the water pump cover & gaskets.  then there should be a lock nut on the end of the impellor shaft that needs to be removed.  This may be a left  hand thread???  (memory escapes me on the older Hondas).  once the lock nut is removed, the impellor should come off the shaft giving access to the water seal.  some of these required a special tool to remove the seal (both the water seal & the oil seal) but a make shift can be done by drilling two small holes opposite each other, threading in a wood s***w into each hole, to give you something to grab onto to pull the seal out.  repeat for the oil seal.  to install the new seals, find a deep socket about the size of the outside diameter or slightly smaller than the seal that clears the diameter of the shaft.  put the oil seal in place, then use the socket to press the seal back into the case.  tap lightly with a hammer to insure a snug fit.  repeat with the water seal.

replace the impellor, gaskets and cover... you should be good to go.

I would highly recommend you get a shop manual for the bike as it will give you step by step instructions on how to remove & replace...
