we're thinking about going to hawaii or fiji for our honeymoon in October. Any suggestions? what should we do there? Where should we stay? We want something beautiful and relaxing with maybe a few activities here and there. We're on a budget, too so cheaper the better:D

  1. First of all you will pay a small fortune to go to Fiji, it's beautiful, but so is Hawaii,so I personally would stay in the states...especially if you are looking for the cheaper way to go, Maui is great, relaxing as well as beautiful, the Island offers surfing, scuba, snorkeling, snuba(a form of snorkel/scuba) horse-back riding, shopping  in Lahaina or Whalers Village, some night life, and a Fabulous drive to Hana! Or just relax at your resort pool or on Kaanapali Beach!

  2. I can't provide tons of information on Fiji, but, I know quite a lot about Hawaii.

In fact, Hawaii in October would be magnificent! The weather would be fantastic. You'd be missing the rainier/winder season and you'd be just past the intense heat of the summer. You'll also be there at the beginning of wave season. I'm guessing the waves won't be super huge, but, they'll be bigger and more exciting than in the summer.

A few things you have to check out would be the surfing hot spots. No matter which island you go to, the North Shore is generally more exciting. If you're lucky you may even be able to catch the beginning of surfing competition season. And, even though we aren't surfers it's a super fun and interesting experience. A real cultural experience :)

If you go to Maui, there is also a really great restaurant called Mama's Fish House. The name sounds casual, but, it is in fact a real hot spot for the stars. It's just left of the parking area at one of the greatest surfing spots in Maui. It's expensive, but, since it's your honeymoon it'd be a super special treat! The location is stunning....you can't see the surfers from it and the waves are a lot more calm - even though it's only a few hundred feet away.

In Maui a ride around the entire island is a must!  We drove the entire island in one day, but, I'm not sure I'd suggest that to others. Especially the Hana Highway - which goes through the rainforest. The driver doesn't get to enjoy the trip and it's very windy and curvy and dangerous if you're not comfortable driving like that. I think a bus tour would be really nice!!

I'd probably stay in Lahaina if I went to Maui again. It's a smaller more laid back version of Waikiki. An incredible place, really! Last time we stayed in Kihei, which is cheaper but, the beaches aren't great and we needed a car to get anywhere.

You seriously have to explore in Maui! Just take a trip into the central part of it an everything. There is this one city we found, whose name I totally can't remember, but, it was a artist area with tons of glass making places. AND, oddly, we had the BEST Mexican food we've ever had their. Homemade nacho chips to die for!

A trip up Haleakala Volcano is beautiful as well. The colors of the no longer active volano are dream-like. Make sure to bring a sweater and long pants though, it's quite cold at the top!

Big Beach was our favourite beach in Maui. It's east (I think) of Kihei and seems to be more a local spot. When we were there in November it wasn't very busy, which was really nice.

My inlaws go every year and say the day trips from Maui to Lania and Molokai are very much worth it! I think there are some snorkeling experience you can get as well.

In Oahu, a lot of people hang out in Waikiki which is a magical city, but, a trip to Kailua and Lahaina is absolutely necessary if you visit Oahu. The beaches are amazing and a lot more quiet than in Oahu. There are also some fantastic restaurants! It's only a 20 minute drive from Waikiki...so close we actually went every day when we were in there. The neat thing about the drive is that you go to through rainforest area on the way and it is always raining for that small stretch of the trip.

And, if you're a couple of like - my husband love the waves and I can't swim - Kailua is as good a compromise as you'll find. There are waves, but, even a non swimmer feels safe and enjoys the excitement of it. Big Beach is a lot like this - wavy but not to wavy!

Something else you might like is the Blowhole in Oahu - you'll have to some research on where it is, but, if you're lucky to get their on a day water spurts up through this hole up to 100 metres high!

The North Shore in Oahu is where we saw our first surfing competition. It was SOOOO cool. The drive their was beautiful and if you want to try body surfing, Waimea beach is the place to do it in style! When we were there, the waves were exceptionally huge (3 storeys high) but because of how they break they are safe enough for body surfers - if of course you're a good swimmer. I imagine that even with smaller waves it's be amazing!!!!

Again, in Oahu, make sure you take a trip around the entire Island. It's only a 4 hour drive if you don't stop. Stay one night on the west or east coast so you can stop along the way and really enjoy the ride. You can do the North Shore and Waimea Beach during this trip.

Don't plan to stay along the North Shore. We found it really pricey and the accommodation isn't that great for the price. That's why I suggest the east and west shores for an overnight stay. I think it's more expensive than in Waikiki, but, I can't say for sure. Don't even consider camping. Oddly, the campgrounds are horrible in Oahu. Very unsafe and very dirty.

I wouldn't go for one of the resorts in Hawaii. You'd really miss out - unless it's the one in Lahaina. But, in Oahu, we got great prices and GREAT hotels using hotels.com. We stayed a block from the beach and it was less than $100 per night. I think it was double booking with an agent.

Hanauma Bay is a super touristy, but, it's very much worth it. I'm not exactly keen on putting my head under water, but, once I did the beautiful under water life was incredible. It isn't deep sea snorkeling, so it's pretty safe and great! It's really beautiful!!

One last piece of advice. If you go into the waves, as a woman, make sure your bikini isn't too string bikini'ish. The waves happen to make the top slide way way up :)  The bottoms are always ok, but, make sure the top is on snuggly.

    Have fun wherever you go!!!

    Congratulations!!!

  3. i would love to go to fiji but i've heard there's a lot of political unrest there now and they aren't advising people to go there now.  check into that before making plans!

  4. Fiji For Sure, But check for Rainy season. (don't go then)

Fiji is one on my most favorite places in the world, (Besides Bora-Bora) If you go to fiji, go to a resort off the coast...Like Plantation Island, Muscat Cove, Treasure Island Etc.

Mainland Fiji is OK as well but I liked outer islands best.
