Hong Kong, Mainland China, Seoul trip on $6000USD?

I am planning on flying into Hong Kong from Oregon, staying a few days and then traveling through the south and up the east coast of mainland China (2 1/2 month duration)- then taking a ferry to Seoul or Incheon Korea and stay there 1 week before returning to the US.

Can I make it on $5000-$6000 USD? (excluding airfare to and from America)

I am going to be budget traveling (trying to stay in hostels if possible and cheap/midrange hotels)- I will be traveling with a friend so we can split roomfare sometimes. I will also be eating cheap local food 95% of the time.

  1. it would be easier to tell you if we knew how many places you were planning on going to, the more places the higher your cost b/c the cost of transportation, but, I agree with the other answerer, you are pushing it with 6,000, no doubt it could be done, but, it would be tight

  2. I'd say your fine, $2000 is plenty per month if your not shopping all the time & like you said eating locally. Check out the LonelyPlanet site for more advice. Hong Kong will be your most expensive i'd rekon as i'm not long back.

We got a decent hostel for $40 a nite (split meaning $20 each a night) in Causeway Bay central to everything plus transport in HK is amazing & local food was dirt cheap & theirs plenty to do for a few days on a budget.

  3. I would say $6k will be pretty tight budget for 2 1/2 month trip but should be good enough. It won't be expensive for food if you are not planning to have fancy one every day. A meal from McDonald would be just less USD4 in HK and China.

I would say most of your budget will be spent on your accommodation. I think it should cost about USD80-100 for a decent hotel in HK and 30% less in China. I would recommend you to take train from HK and up to the North. It's the safer way and fun compare to taking buses. If you want to take domestic flight from the south of China to the north (somewhere like Shanghai), it costs about USD100 for round-trip.
