Hong Kong Open Super Series: Tine Baun ousts Li Michelle in Women’s Singles pre-quarter-final fight
Denmark’s top female shuttler, Tine Baun is through to the Women’s Singles top-8 stage as she has ousted Canada’s Li Michelle in the pre-quarter-final fight in the 2011 Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open Super Series, on Thursday, November 17, in Hong Kong.
Baun, who is enjoying the 7th spot in the Women’s Singles world standings, proved that she belongs to the highest class of players as she showed no mercy to the lower ranked Canadian. The seventh seed Danish took 31 minutes to register his win over Michelle in straight games. The Canadian failed to match the level of her higher ranked opponent and lost the match in meekly way.
In both games of this round-of-16 battle, the Danish played positive badminton remained ahead of her opponent. Her control over the pace of the rallies was just incredible as she put up strong show of top quality strokes from all areas of the court. Her wrist work was impressive as she deceived Michelle on different occasions. Her remarkable performance earned her victory without any trouble.
Baun started the game in an interesting way as she took a wonderful lead in the opening points of the set. Her attacking and positive strokes found the side lines of her opponent’s court. Michelle completely failed to return the bird effectively. Until the break, the Danish was progressing in the game with a wonderful score of 11-6.
After the interval, Baun extended her lead by putting more pressure on the Canadian, who had no answer to the attacking game of the higher ranked Danish lady. The seventh seed Baun bagged the game in just 14 minutes with a superb 21-12 score on the board.
In the following set of this fight, Baun continued her attacking game and maintained pressure on her opponent. Michelle tried her best to match the speed of her higher ranked challenger but failed as Baun was playing on the highest level of the game. The planned and better play of Baun helped her in taking the second game with a huge margin of 21-14 in 17 minutes. The final score of this 31-minute round-of-16 contest was 21-12 and 21-14.
In the quarter-final, Baun will take on the fourth seed Saina Nehwal of India, who crushed Jie Yao of Netherlands in the previous battle.
