Hong Kong Open Super Series: Viktor Axelsen overwhelms Hsu Jen Hao in the Men’s Singles first round
Denmark’s emerging young player Viktor Axelsen proves his elevated skills as he has overwhelmed the higher ranked Hsu Jen Hao of Chinese Taipei in the Men’s Singles first round of the 2011 Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open Super Series, in Hong Kong, on Wednesday,
November 16.
The former World Junior Champion and current World Number 44, Axelsen proved that he has attained the required skills to put the top shuttlers in trouble. He played to his full potential and remained successful in winning the three-set match against the
World Number 39 Jen Hao by consuming 57 minutes in the court.
The Danish shuttler played tremendous badminton in the first game and won it in a one-sided and impressive way. However, he failed to finish the match in straight games as his opponent played positive and attacking game in the second set and won it to level
the match. In the final game, the Danish player changed his tactics and became quicker in all areas of the court. He took the final game with a good difference.
Right from the start of the first game, Axelsen controlled the pace of the game by picking the bird early from all areas of the court. He made no mistake in setting up a good lead until the break. The Taipei shuttler failed to play positively as many of
his strokes went into the net or wide of the court. Axelsen took the first set without facing the expected resistance by a one-sided score of 21-11.
In the following set, the contest became tight as both men pushed each other in all corners of the court by keeping their speed at the highest level. The score remained equal in the opening half as both played at the same level. After the interval, the Danish
failed to focus in the game and started to commit errors. He made a few mistakes in the concluding phase and lost the set to Taipei shuttler with a 17-21 score.
In the deciding game of this Men’s Singles entertaining match, Axelsen found his momentum by accelerating his speed and remained successful in pushing his rival in a defensive position. The aggressive approach of the Danish shuttler helped him in winning
the final game with a 21-15 score on the board.
The Danish appeared as the winner of this 57-minute match with an overall result of 21-11, 17-21 and 21-15.
