Hong-Kong beat Korea on final day of the Continental Beach Volleyball Cup
The AVC Continental Beach Volleyball Cup was held at Haikou, China on Tuesday, October 19 and the extreme action on the beach continued till October 20, 2010. Teams from Korea, China and Hong Kong were placed in Pool A, while the event was attended by both
men’s and women’s pairs. In the men’s section, the hosts China completely dominated the podium on the first day of the tournament. Linyin Xu/Wu Penggen and Gao Peng/Li Jian of China defeated the opponents from Korea and Hong-Kong.
The tournament entered the second-day and Hong Kong achieved its mark. Wong Chun Wai/Wong Kwun Pong of Hong Kong demonstrated great performance against the rivals from Korea. It was the second match of the day, which brought Korea’s Kwon/AN in front of Wong/Pong.
The Hong Kong’s pair outplayed Koreans and clinched victory. Likewise, Hong Kong was challenged by another Korean pair of Ko Junyong/Lee in the following match. Wong/Pong proved to be better side and snatched victory from Korean side.
1- Hong Kong vs. Korea 2-1(21-18, 24-26, and 15-12)
Kwon/AN of Korea opened the match with flawless serves and stood against Hong Kong’s team. They used their muscle-power to throw the ball over the net, in order to score points. Likewise, Hong Kong’s Pair was equally active on the other side of the net.
They received the balls with accuracy and returned them with more power. Wong/Pong spent a little time to judge the level of difficulty offered by the Korean squad. They grasped the game-plan of Korea and started the strike. Both sides attacked each other
with a variety of shots. The score soared up with a close gap of points. The real mental game started after the second technical timeout when Hong Kong widened the gap of points. Korea’s Kwon dived nicely to dig-up the tricky short serves but Hong Kong was
successful to provide damage to rival side. The first-set victory greeted Hong Kong at 21-18.
The Korean pair was simply fired-up after losing the first set. They came up with a different plan in the following set and stormed Hong Kong’s half with swift speed-bombs. They picked up an early lead and hindered opponents’ performance. Nonetheless, Hong
Kong showed valiant effort and scored points regularly. Wong hit the ball in corners and worked out sharp spikes. By hook or by crook, Korea got a perfect kill in the end to take sweet revenge from Hong Kong by claiming second set at 26-24.
The 15-point golden set started out with great pace. Each side wanted to take advantage over the opposite team. Hong Kong hit better shots and edged Korea by posting 15-12. They saw the first victory in the tournament.
Hong Kong vs. Korea 2-1 (19-21, 21-14, and 15-11)
The pair of Wong/Pong was full of energy by achieving success against Korea in the earlier match. They confirmed their ambition to attend the 2012 Olympic Games in London by securing victory against Korea. Yet they had to defeat the other challenger from
Korea. Ko Junyong and Lee of Korea stroke with Hong Kong’s team in the last match of the day.
The early phase of the game was influenced by the Korean as they produced killing spikes and nice aces. They pulled off victory in the first set by 21-19. However, Hong Kong made a great come-back in the second set. Wong was on serve and floated the ball
with great skill. Wong complimented his partner and put pressure on the Korean duo by hitting unstoppable spikes. Hong Kong won the second set by sending 21-14. The next set was also overpowered by Hong Kong and they successfully ousted Korea with a score
of 15-11.
