Question:

Hoof/Leg Injury?

My horse ripped a small chunk out of the middle/top section of her hoof and ripped into the "meat" of her leg. I have been cleaning it with betadine solution and wrapping it while she's out to pasture with neosporin on it. Am I on the right track? Her cut is very clean and it doesnt seem to bother her as much as it did the day she injured herself.

  1. I wouldn't use an iodine product of any kind on this type of wound.  Rinse it with sterile saline if you can get it.  The risk of infection is pretty high in that location...I'd watch it closely for heat, swelling, sudden tenderness or drainage and keep wrapping it until there is some healing without any of the above present.

  2. Just call your vet and let him/her know whats up and what your doing about it. Asks questions and if your vet feels everythings ok, then continue w/ what your doing but keep an eye out for infections. I recomend you have your vet come out anyway and look at, because she might need stitches or something (I dont know i havent seen her hoof and i'm also not a vet). I hope everything goes well. =]

  3. the betadine is going to make her start growing proud flesh so I would quite using that. wrapping it is good so I would keep it up. there is a nolvasan cream that you can put on it before you wrap it which is an antibacterial other than that keep it clean but you do not want to run alot of water over it either as that will cause proud fleash as well.

  4. keeping it clean and wrapped is very good, when my horses got his leg wrapped in barb wire my vet gave some purple stuff it healed it up very fast call the vet and ask for it, i cant remember the name but do know it was dark purple

  5. The one thing I can tell you is go to a vet and see if you are doing all the right stuff.

  6. Without seeing the injury it is hard to say. I don't mess around with hoof injuries though, I let the vets handle those because they get infected so easily.
