Question:

Hook up VCR to HDTV?

We have a VCR, Cable Box, and HDTV set up. We are having trouble connecting them all together. We don't really care about having our VCR record anything. We just want to be able to play our VHS tapes on the TV. The back of the VCR has Coaxial IN and OUT ports. And it has Yellow and White IN and OUT ports. No red. How do we do this? Right now we have a coaxial cable going in it, out through the cable box and into the TV, and we have the Yellow and White cords going out straight into the TV into the AV2 spot. When we try and play a VHS, in AV2, we have audio, but the picture is gray and fuzzy. We can't see anything. Please help fix this. Cheers.

  1. Let me make sure that I understand how you have it hooked up. You have the coaxial wall connection going into the input in the VCR, then you have a coaxial cable going from the output in the VCR, to the Input in the box. Then, you have a coaxial cable coming from the output in the box, to the input in your TV. To get a better picture, you should have the wall connection going to the Input in the box, and then have a coaxial cable going from the output in the box, to the Input in the VCR. Then, have another coaxial cable coming from the output in the VCR, to the Input in the TV. You do not need to use the Yellow and White RCA cable. Just put your TV on either channel 3 or 4 to watch everything. You should get a better picture if the wall connection is going into the box, instead of the VCR.

  2. Are you sure that your VCR is working correctly ? That may be why the picture is fuzzy. Try your VCR on another TV and see if it works any better.

If the VCR is fine, I would try hooking up your VCR to your TV via the coaxial cable to the TV, and see if this helps. Some older cable boxes can accept inputs , so you might want to see if you could hook up your VCR to the cable box and then to the TV, and see if this will help with your picture.

Unless your VCR has an S-video output, I'm afraid you have run out of options, one other thing you might try changing your yellow and white cable, it could be the cord is the source of your problem.
