I have a Uniden 5.8 GHz cordless phone set-up (1 base with 4 handsets) and I love the phones but the range kinda sux in my house. I have a VERY old house with very thick walls and my base in downstairs on the east side of the house. When trying to use a handset upstairs on the west side of the house, the connection cuts out all the time. I have an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station with a USB port right on it. It has incredible range (I've connected to my network with my MacBook at about 1/4 mile) and I was just thinking it would be great if I could use it's range to power cordless phones... It's probably a silly question, but is there any kind of cordless phone base that I could plug into that USB port on the Base Station and then run multiple handsets? I know the Extreme Base Station supports up to 50 wireless clients so power isn't an issue... If there is such a thing, let me know! Thanx!

  1. There are D-LInk and Linksys USB phone adapters for Skype users.  But, the USB adapter must plug directly into the PC.

The only way to connect a telephone directly to Router is to use a VoIP ATA with Ethernet connector.

Again, there are various VoIP ATA's that plug directly into the Ethernet ports on your Router, or Modem.  And, Linksys makes a Skype adapter that includes a cordless phone that plugs directly into the Route.

Otherwise, if you want to try a VoIP ATA the you can configure with any of the BYOD (bring your own voip device) VoIP services, then you could try using the Linksys PAP2T-NA or SPA-2102-NA.

These are user-configurable (unlocked) ATA's that you can connect to BYOD VoIP services like CallCentric and Inphonex.  That is how I do it.

With these ATA boxes, you can plug your Uniden 5.9 GHz cordless phone directly into the ATA and have VoIP phone service.  I do it with my Panasonic DECT 6.0 cordless phones.

  2. I have never heard of a USB port phone.

Maybe looking at newegg.com would help? Its a computer type website.
